Fundraising Updates

We enter this final phase of the campaign with $2.6 million in cash and committed funds.

In April, 2007 we launched our “piggy bank” campaign where attendees at MAHA events and visitors to our office are asked to contribute to our campaign. Later this spring, we will do a direct mail campaign and telephone follow-up to our homebuyer graduates to encourage even broader participation. And this fall, we will conduct a house party campaign to engage more medium range and high-end donors."

Construction Progress

We expect to begin construction in June 2007 and are estimating a move-in date of February, 2008. While construction has not yet begun, we can report that with the help of our generous landlord, we have arranged to purchase both the building we have rented for 10 years and a small adjacent parcel of land.

MAHA staff has moved to temporary office space at 197A Centre Street, Dorchester.

MAHA kicks off first-ever capital campaign, honors retiring Assistant Director

On Saturday, November 19 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, MAHA launched its first-ever capital campaign and honored its newly retired Assistant Director, Florence Hagins.

MAHA announced the formation of their capital campaign committee at the event, introducing Robert Sheridan, President and CEO of Savings Bank Life Insurance, as its chairperson and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino as the honorary chair.

Florence Hagins became involved with MAHA in 1990 when she became the first person to receive a SoftSecond mortgage. During her tenure at MAHA, Hagins counseled over 8,000 new homebuyers and became an invaluable resource in the struggle for affordable housing.

MAHA paid tribute to Hagins in an effort to realize one of her dreams: establishing a home for MAHA that will serve as classrooms, meeting space, and offices for organizing and counseling staff. To honor Hagins' many contributions to the organization, MAHA will name a room in the new office after her. Hagins and her daughter, Andraea, made a $1,000 donation during the evening to support MAHA's capital campaign.

Commemorative posters from the evening featuring the artwork of Boston-based artist Ekua Holmes can be purchased for $25 by contacting MAHA. Proceeds support MAHA's capital campaign. For more info, contact Andrea Kunst at 617-822-9100.
