Ending Redlining
For years, consumers and community groups in low income areas have complained that insurance companies avoided doing business in certain neighborhoods. In 1996, MAHA was a major force behind the passage of the toughest property insurance disclosure law in the country. The Insurance Redlining Act requires the top 25 property insurers to report, by zip code, where they do business in Massachusetts. Each year, MAHA ranks the companies based on how well they are serving low income and minority neighborhoods throughout Massachusetts. See Insuring Neighborhoods VI for our most recent report.
